Abortion Morals and Ethics

The debate of abortion is very controversial and it has affected many people. In my opinion I feel that a woman should have the right to choose if she wants to have an abortion. Women should be able to control their own body, and they should not be under any moral obligation to give birth. Abortion is an issue that will be debated from the steps of Congress to the town hall meetings. Ethics play a big role in whether it is morally or ethically right/wrong to have an abortion. In my opinion I feel it is the right of a woman to decide if she wants to have an abortion or not. I don’t feel that by having an abortion, the person is malicious or anything, because it’s a tough and life changing decision. Roe v. Wade made it a right to choose.

An ethical approach that applies to the issue of abortion is the different forms of ethical egoism. Ethical egoism deals with one’s self-interest (Thiroux, pg.36). Ethical egoism deals with consequences and I feel that by having an abortion, there will be some sorts of consequence involved. The variant types of ethical egoism include personal and universal ethical egoism. Personal ethical egoism states that a person in the case of abortion should be able to act in her own self-interest, but make no claims about what everyone should do. I agree with this reasoning, that a person, in this case a woman, should act in her own self-interest. If it is the best choice for their certain situation then they should not be influenced or influencing others in a matter that should be private, like abortion. There is almost always a reason as to why someone has an abortion, like a financial situation where someone or someones can’t afford to raise a baby. It could be an age thing, many teens that are under the age of eighteen get pregnant and having a baby might be a detriment for their careers.
