Industry is the production of an economic good or service within an economy. When the Industrial revolution took off in 1750 it spurred the development of factories that were made for large-scale production and society was changed forever. The pros of the industrial revolution and industry are almost infinite, with the economic growth from industry a country can expand globally, machines can rapidly produce products for large numbers of people, automobiles and plans can take us to almost anyplace we would like to go, and everything we own and how we live was a direct result of it. With every good thing that comes, there will be some negatives that sprout out with them. In terms of Industry, one of the major problems is that of Industrial pollution. One of the leading causes of pollution worldwide, “the Environmental Protective Agency estimates that up to 50% of the nation's pollution is caused by industry. Because of its size and scope, industrial pollution is a serious problem for the entire planet, especially in nations which are rapidly industrializing, like China.” (Wise Geek) The effects on Industrial pollution can be quite far reaching. Emissions of greenhouse gases like CO2 and methane from industries lead to global warming. The air pollution increase that has resulted from the industrial revolution can cause acid rain, the water pollution killing animals; soil pollution can result in a loss of fertility that can harm plant growth. It’s important for us to take a look at three cities that are leading the industry side of the economy today, because they are the role models for how other companies will operate in the future. So in this paper we will look at three megacities, New York City, Beijing, and Delhi and examine how industrial pollution has affected them.
