Typical features

• Shell: Art and copperplate paper remain the dominant options. The latter is prefered because of its high degree of whiteness and elasticity. Further, the input’s evenly structured fibers impart uniform thickness and smoothness, and good shrink and water resistance. It likewise absorbs dyes well during printing. Makers also employ leatherette paper, which is soft yet strong, has a texture of leather, withstands scratches and is easy to fasten using glue. Although imported variants are adopted, many companies use domestically sourced kinds as these cost less. • Construction: Suppliers offer models with detachable or fixed lids. Some items have slide-in structures. KD and foldable pieces are gaining traction as well.

• Lining & backing: Grayboard is often used as reinforcement. Several upscale boxes are lined with velvet or satin fabric.

• Motif & trimming: Designs in solid colors with flocked, heart or floral patterns are popular. As for embellishments, ribbons, dry flowers and rhinestones are common.

• Finish: To improve moisture and scratch resistance, durability and colorfastness, most products are laminated. Many leatherette versions adopt a water-soluble coating. For enhanced aesthetics, manufacturers use UV curing, gold and silver plating, embossing, debossing or die-cutting.
