Performance Appraisal

comes from the latin “preiser” (merriam-webster) to prize, praise, set the value of, worth or significance, ie. to estimate merit. performance appraisal is sometimes a fancy term for “performance review”, an annual activity performed by virtually all corporations in all industries to manage the firms human resources. this lets the management of the firm know each employee contribution, and how valuable each employee is. it also keeps the employees oriented to company objectives. and as such, some employees may be terminated because they do not fall in line with company policies or objectives or simply not a match for the firm or the employee, or an efficient and highly performing employee may be rewarded, promoted with additional benefits.

Performance – measures how close to the target objectives a particular employee is, and is determined by individual skill and self-motivation of the employee using effort

Effort - refers to the energy expended, performance is measured in terms of results. example, a student may exert a lot of effort in preparing for an exam and still make a poor grade. in this case the effort expended was high, yet the performance was low.

Efficiency/effectiveness – refers to the amount of resources spent by the employee (time, money, equipment etc)

Poor performance – usually because of a lacks effort, skill, or incorrect role perception

according to the book of Dr. Medina, "Performance is a result of the effort expended by the employee and which is modified by his abilities and his perception of his role."

among the general factors are:

• Time – deadlines can effect performance depending on how the employee deals with pressure.
