My term paper will be covering the character Sam Cahill from the 2009 film Brothers. Sam suffers from severe post-traumatic stress disorder. I will be describing the character and the experiences he goes through as well as explaining my diagnosis of Sam Cahill and why I feel he is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and the symptoms he experiences because of this. Also, I will explore treatment options available to him and the ones I feel will benefit him the most.

Post-traumatic stress disorder occurs in many people who have experienced a major trauma in their life, either mental, physical or both. The traumatic experience that they suffer from continues to haunt them long after any physical threat has passed. Post-traumatic stress disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by reliving a traumatic situation, psychologically, long after any physical danger involved has passed, through flashbacks and nightmares (Canadian Mental Health Association,2012).

Treatments for PTSD are very personalized for obvious reasons. Each experience will be different and can affect a person in different ways. Everyone deals with stress and traumatic situations in very different ways and what might not affect someone can cause big emotional strain on another person. Of the various types of psychotherapy, the one most widely accepted as useful for PTSD is cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy (Cohen, 2012). Group therapy and talk therapy are also very effective treatment options, Sam is treatable but he will have to be willing to accept treatment to move on from what happened to him. I will be looking deeper into these therapy methods and find the best options for Sam Cahill.
