Silent Suppression

Silent suppression is a way to conserve bandwidth when using voice communications or audio over the internet. This can also be used for IP phones because IP phones carry voice data over the internet. Silent suppression basically gets rid of useless data, which is how the bandwidth is saved. Many businesses take advantage of this feature. Since the bandwidth is saved, communications between peers would be clearer with minimum interruptions.

Regular phone lines cannot use silent suppression because the data is not being transferred across the internet. “In the past, the entire channel through which the telecommunication was taking place was devoted to the conversation. That was not a problem because at that time the only function of the telecommunications system was to transmit voice data. The Internet transmits a wide variety of data, and with the greater demand for data transfer, the transmission speed can suffer.”

Slow speed on the internet is the last thing we need for voice because voice is used in real-time. We can’t expect delays when talking to someone on the phone. We also can’t expect slurred speeches when talking to someone on the phone. This is why it is very important to conserve as much bandwidth as possible for voice data. If someone needs to make an emergency call, it is important that the call is made efficiently. With silent suppression, it will eliminate any voice distortions and jumps between words.

“This is possible because during a telephone conversation only one side is generally speaking at a time. Therefore, half of the time, the other party is listening. With traditional equipment, that silence was information still transmitted, and could not be eliminated. Now, silence suppression technology can eliminate that information by sending descriptions of the background noise, instead of sending the noise itself, a strategy that can...
