The Northern Ireland Conflict

The conflict in Northern Ireland was caused by different constitutional aspiration of the two main sections of the community in the region. Catholics-Nationalist in the political appearance consider themselves to be Irish, they wanted to see the whole nation of Ireland reunited and independent of Britain. The second section of the community Protestants-Unionists consider themselves to be British, that’s way they wanted Northern Ireland to remain as the part of the United Kingdom union (England, Scotland and Wales). The unconformity between religion, culture and political appearance was the result of the conflict. The conflict started on the 14th of August 1969, it is difficult to agree on a date for the end of ‘the Troubles ‘. The Troubles is a term that was commonly used by the public in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Protestants where very close to England and Scotland in terms of a culture, therefore Protestants with better support acquired the land and wealth, Catholics were forced from their lands. British character and Protestants domination of Northern Ireland, loyalist paramilitaries such as the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) and Ulster Defence Association (UDA) launched their campaigns against the Catholics population. The security forces — British Army and the police (the Royal Ulster Constabulary) — were also involved in the violence. The British government's point of view was that its forces were neutral in the conflict. Irish republicans, however, regarded the forces as combatants in the conflict, using alleged collusion between the state forces and the loyalist paramilitaries as proof of this. The investigation by the Police has confirmed that British forces did collude with loyalist paramilitaries, were involved in murder, and did obstruct the course of justice at the time. 705 British soldiers were killed and 1,300 injured.
