To Get Respect You Must Show Respect

If you expect respect, be the first to show it?

To understand this phrase completely we must first define the word respect. Respect, to me, is showing a gesture of appreciation in a good manner towards someone’s beliefs, feelings and religion. Respect is also the way you treat someone when they are with you and how you speak of them when they are not with you. There are several ways in which you may show respect and earn respect, which reflects on, “If you expect respect, be the first to show it”. Some of theses ways are showing self respect, respecting one’s opinions and feelings, and also listening and understanding others.

Respect yourself. Believing in yourself and confidence in everything you do, may have an impact on the ways people view you. Self presentation is a big part of earning respect. Believing in yourself and the things that you do is very important when it comes to showing self respect. Your appearance by always being groomed and wearing presentable clothing makes people want to respect you. You have to treat others well, show manners at all times, and present yourself in a manner that says, I am worthy of your respect. People find it extremely hard to show respect to someone who does not show them respect or carries themselves in a bad manner.

You may have instances where someone has a different opinion or believes in something that you don’t believe in, but we must still acknowledge that this is theirs thoughts and beliefs. You must show respect in order to receive respect. We should treat people and their feelings as we expect other to do for us. My mother has always told me, “Do unto others what you would like to be done to you”. With that being said, we all expect respect but forget to properly show others at times. We must be fair towards another person’s opinion. We must always lets others know we value their opinions and be sensitive towards their thoughts and feelings.
