Music to Happiness

Everyone defines happiness differently. There’s not one thing that makes every person in the universe equally happy and for me, its music. Unfortunately, Woodland Community College lacks a music program, or any music classes at all. Adding music classes will help student find happiness in college through the release of the education of music. (At least for my personal happiness), WCC should add music classes to their curriculum.

To start off with, schools don’t have enough social skill building classes in their curriculums, and this could cause students to go through school with out being happy. In the article The Happiness Factor by David Brooks, he states, “Most schools and colleges spend too much time preparing students for careers and not enough preparing them for social decisions.”(595) Brooks is stating that schools spend too much time working on the academics like Math, English, Science and History courses rather than Leadership, Arts, Theatre and especially Music. If they spend too much time on the academics then kids will go through school without the life skills to make a happy life for themselves.

Next, being involved in a music class has proven to improve a student overall grade point average. At Pioneer High School, Bobby Rogers, one of the music teachers, revealed in conversation that a majority of the students in band and other music courses tend to have a better grade point average rather then those who are not involved in music. Of those students, most lead on to be very successful academically and socially in college and their job settings. To conclude, if students were given the opportunity to take these courses, it would benefit their success in the long run.
