In the criminal justice field technology is the most used tool to assist local law enforcement achieve its expanded and more complex operations. The criminal justice system relies and runs off information. The information within the criminal justice system consists of criminal incidents, potential defendants, people who are incarcerated either serving their sentences or awaiting trial. There is also information about the court process which includes scheduled events and outcomes of past events. All this information that is contained whether kept in records or sealed affects the way people are treated in the system or the outcome of an individual concerning a case. The crime rate is not decreasing if anything it is increasing rapidly, as it is increasing so does the need for new technology.

Criminals are always looking for different ways to commit a crime, or ways to get out of facing consequences for their actions. Therefore the criminal justice system needs to be ahead of criminals at all times. There is a need to reevaluate and come up with new ideas to stay ahead of criminals each year. Due to the constant change in technology and the way it is changing the way people communicate, the criminal justice system must grow to keep up with the present-day actions. The day to day communication of specific databases within the criminal justice system has been affected in a huge way by technology.

The Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) is one of the many types of computerized systems that officers may use to provide about a suspect. The Automated Fingerprint Identification System can log information for a city, state, or country. The system has the ability to connect with larger databases, such as the one used by the FBI.
