Lymphoma or Hodgkin’s Disease

1. In 1666, Malpighi published the first ever known description of Hodgkin’s disease. In 1832, Thomas Hodgkin published his paper on the lymphatic disease about “morbid appearances in the glands and spleen”. From this point on in history, lymphatic, or Hodgkin’s disease has been further researched and studied by many scientists and physicians.

2. Depending on where the cancer starts, the symptoms of lymphoma include

a. Swelling in the neck, underarm, or groin

b. Other swelling many be present in the lymph nodes

c. Swollen arms and legs

d. Tingling and numbness

e. Fever, chills, night sweats

f. Weight loss

g. Itching

3. Treatment depends on how far along the cancer is, age, weight, height, and medical history. Usually this type of cancer is treated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and biological therapy.

4. It is unknown what percentage of people is diagnosed with lymphoma, however it is the most common cancer of the blood.

5. The cause of Hodgkin’s disease is unknown but there are risk factors that may make one more susceptible to getting the disease.

a. Exposure to environmental posions

b. Family history of the disease (genetic)

c. Gender (more common in males)

d. History of infections

e. Prolonged use of human growth hormone

6. This disease affects the lymphatic system and immune system.

8. There is about $72 million dollars that goes to research and other things for lymphoma from the LLS

9. The survival rate for those below the age of 20 years old is 95.5%.

10. The cancer has a genetic component.
