A. Analysis

1. Analyze the conflict.

My neighbor has a pug dog. The dog barks at night and causes disturbance in the neighborhood. My grandmother’s room is on the side of our neighbor’s house and very close to the dog’s kernel. She can barely sleep at night due to the dog’s constant activities and barking. I want my neighbor to see that the does not make noise in the night. We tried to discuss the issue with them, but they said they cannot help it. He wants my grandmother to change her room and sleep on the other side of the house.

The cause of the conflict is primarily the inappropriate behavior of our neighbor. It is one’s civic duty to be peaceful, co-operative and helpful towards neighbors. Senior citizens should be treated with respect. Our neighbor clearly deviates from what is generally expected from neighbor and hence his behavior can be considered inappropriate. Showing disregard to an elderly woman who keeps ill and cannot sleep is considered bad manners.

The level of conflict was of type ‘latent conflict’ last month when we gave showed enough signs and passed enough comments to display our disappointments and frustrations. But the neighbor took no notice and continued to live in ignorance. The level has increased to ‘Problems to solve’ last week when we approached the neighbor to address the issue and find ways to resolve the conflict in a win-win situation.

2. Identify conflict styles of the people involved.

The people involved in this conflict are mainly my grandmother and the neighbor. The conflicting style of our neighbor is ‘competition/aggression’. Neighbor wants us to accept his point of view and interests. He wants to satisfy his needs of keeping the dog and do nothing about the dog’s way of living. This is a forcing mode. He does not care that this temporary win in this situation is actually making him lose friends and the love and respect of neighbors.
