Book Review: The Sixty-Second Motivator

What is Motivation? We learn in this course that motivation is the force that moves us to action, gives us direction, persistence and energy. All while moving us toward our goals. We find though that sometimes we have motivation but still lack the drive to act. While reading this text I found the answer to why this is? I agree with this book and here is why, it sheds light on why people have neglected to change some behaviors. Its brings an understanding to the madness why some people who are about to die of lung cancer still smoke or why people who are morbidly obese have neglected to change their eating habits all while relating to why these changes do not occur regarding internal communication I will explain more later.

The sixty-Second Motivator is a short story of a young physical therapist who strives to be beyond average, on a quest to learn to motivate people in order to in turn help the patient’s ailments. A patient simply knowing that they needed to get up and walk in order to fill better was not enough to motivate them to do so. Understanding the reasoning behind this was this young physical therapist’s journey. “Logical reasons, no matter how much sense they might make, will quite often fail to motivate you to do things. On the other hand, finding a reason that gives you something you really want, will always increase importance, and in turn motivate you to do things.” (Johnson). This relates to chapter seven out of the course text. This statement from The Sixty-Second Motivator shows the sources of motivation whether intrinsic or extrinsic reward, must be obtained in order to motivate a person to do something. Simply knowing that something is bad will not motivate them for change.

It gives the example in the Motivator of the elderly man that had a hip replacement knowing he needed to try to walk to get to feel better but still refused to do so. So the therapist talked with the man and found out he hated...
