The woods were the first temples of the gods, at first the men in the field lived and worshiped nature. Afterwards the men who were living in the towns put beautiful temples in high places to the glory of the gods. Often temples were placed in high places. Why? Because these places were closest to heaven in which the gods lived.

“Nature is Beautiful” said the people. “ Also sacred places to which we go together and in which we seek the benefits of the gods aught to be beautiful. Gods have given good fortune to us. We have gratitude toward the gods, on account of grain by means of which we sustain life and on account of constant help, which they provide to us.

So the Greeks and Romans on account of large benefits of the gods make big and beautiful temples, which were thanks to the gods. The statue either of the god or goddess always was placed in a temple.

In Greece and in Italy runes of many beautiful temples are seen. The famous temple of Athena, called the Parthenon, was always praised for it beautiful shape. Weren’t there many roman temples among the pictures with you saw? Why do you not see the pictures of the Greek and Roman temples, which are found in many books? Even in the newspapers you find pictures of the ancient temples.

In the temples men were seeking the help of the gods. The bad men whose life were in danger , because neither were they being removed from the temples nor were they enduring punishment there.
