In 1999, I received orders to Osan AFB, South Korea. At the time I was young and unaware of the political and social problems that surrounded the party like atmosphere that long plagued this assignment. We visited the bars outside of the base several nights a week as an outlet to the long stressful hours worked during this tour. Most of the bars catered to the predominately male population on the base. They were full of strippers and to hear that a bar fine of $300 dollars was paid to”mamasan” to take someone home for the evening was not uncommon. Being a female and not being part of the target market, I often found time to talk to the girls and learn about passports and identification being taken away. Young girls being enslaved to work at the bars until costs associated with bringing them into the country, housing and clothing them, and paying for food could be paid back to the mamasan. Often these girls lied about their ages to ensure they didn’t seem unappealing to the G.I.s. Human trafficking was alive and thriving in the Republic of Korea.
