Large Corporations Being Criticized For Running Mom-and-Pop Shops Out of Business

Large corporations like Wal-Mart have been criticized for driving mom-and-pop shops out of business. Large corporations and small businesses are alike and thrive on each other for business. Small businesses are more on a personal level as large corporations are not. Large corporations are based on making the most money off their products to survive in the business.

There has been so much talk about these large corporations running the small local businesses out. The customers always have to ask themselves questions before just believing what everyone else says is true. The public needs to always research the information they are given to be sure it is correct or if it is just some ones thoughts. It is not right for the large corporations to have full blame if there is no proof of what the general public is saying.

Studies show that when a Wal-Mart first opens the little business close around do struggle, and are the first ones to go out of business. Joe Persky(2012) is an economics professor at the University of Illinois Chicago. Joe and his colleagues did a study and found that for every mile closer to a Wal-Mart 6 percent more stores closed than normal. Joe Persky(2012) also wanted to make it clear by saying “Small businesses often close. They have a high turnover.” It seems as old businesses close the doors and new businesses come in and open their doors.

Just because a Wal-Mart opened doesn’t mean the small businesses are going to go out of business. Some of the small businesses offer services and products Wal-Mart doesn’t offer. Wal-Mart can sell products and not have to carry the parts for them products; this gives some of the small businesses more business.
