1. Identify 3 internal and external motivators for development of systematic approaches to managing OHS in consultation with managers and other stakeholders.

External factors:

a) Develop a positive public reputation or employer of choice status. Companies with good reputations in areas of employee care tend to attract the best personnel.

b) Legal obligations to provide a safe working environment for employees, for example the obligation to comply with various state and territory OHS Acts.

c) Concerns of informed shareholders regarding safety that may be raised at annual meetings. Shareholders may have a lower tolerance for risk in the area of OHS than operators and can bring pressure to bear on the management to change their approach.

Internal factors:

a) Industrial relations: Refers to the important relationship that exists between employer and employee. This relationship relies on the employer to provide a safe, suitable environment and conditions for employees to undertake their work. Managing health and safety to provide a hazard free environment is very important to keeping this relationship mutually beneficial and productive. Besides needing to meet legislative obligations under industrial relations law, we established a best practice OHSMS to demonstrate our commitment to maintaining a safe place of work. It contributes to workforce buy-in and morale, smoothing relations between management and workers.

b) Illness and injury prevention: There are practical and ethical reasons to establish an OHSMS. As an ethical workplace we want to eliminate illness and injury. We want an accident free workplace in order to function and stay productive. Healthy employees, free from injury, are more productive and less likely to be absent from the workforce. Having an OHSMS contributes to the reduction of illness and injury by building a culture of safe work practices.
