Symbolism means according to the www.answer.com is “the practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects, events, or relationships.” In literature, “symbolism is when some aspect of the story, like a person, object, or location actually represents something else.”(answers.reference.com). Based on the both definition I conclude that symbolism are something that had been used to represent the ideas that give many interpretation and support the story to be more understanding by the audiences. There are several of elements that the writer could use as symbol in their story, such as objects, characters, figures, or colors. These elements will bring deeper meaning for the story itself.

In A Doll’s House, the major theme is about the role of women in society. The author believed that women had a right to develop their own individuality, but in reality, their role was often self-sacrificial. Furthermore, in A Doll’s House, the author have showed the audience with not just the main character which is Nora sacrifice, he also show sacrificial role held by women of all economic classes in the society. For example, Mrs. Linde and the Nurse sacrificial role for a better life. In order to support her mother and two brothers, Mrs. Linde have to married with the richer man and abandon Krogstad who was her true love but poor. The Nurse had to abandon her own child to support her financial by working as Nora’s and her children caretaker. In this play also show that women were not treated as equals with men, either in relation to their husband or society. This statement was support by the Torvald action towards Nora regarding Nora suggestion to keep Krogstad position in the bank. Torvald scared of his employees thinking he has been influenced in a decision about the Krogstad’s job by his wife.
