ON SEX AND GENDER

INTRODUCTION:

1. Men and women are the product of their own environment. The church we went to, the neighborhood we grew up in, or even the people we grew up and played with. The religious, social, or cultural aspects is what made us all who we are as individuals. But even within those aspects as a society we cannot assume or stereotype an individual and I will point out why within my briefing. Good morning, my name is Technical Sergeant Courtney Higgins I will be speaking to you all about one of the 12 domains of culture specifically, Sex and Gender. Within seven minutes I will have briefed you all on two main points; (1) Sex and Gender definition and (2) Gender Roles & Stereotyping. So let me begin by talking about sex

2. So what exactly what the difference between sex and gender. Well, according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), "Sex is biological; use it when the biological distinction is predominant. Gender is cultural and is the term to use when referring to women and men as social groups. This changes between societies and also changes over time and." And according to the World Health Organization (WHO), "Sex refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women. Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women1." Basically when it comes to defining sex and gender, these terms are in a way interchangeable, but at the same time we are all assigned a role from the first day we are born
