EMC Confronts Harassment Charges

Introduction

EMC Corporation which is based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts has had many lawsuits filed against the company. Many women have made complaints to unwanted behavior within the company. Some of which include comments of company paid trips to strip clubs. Some accounts have been removed from the female saleswomen, and given to the men to take over. Records also show that the male salesmen are earning higher salaries, then women who have been with the company for the same length of time.

Review/Analysis of the Case

In opinion EMC Corporation has violated laws in regards to sexual harassment. According to this week’s reading EMC has created a “hostile working environment” (Noe, Hollenbeck, Wright & Gerhart, 2009) which is created when someone of one sex, makes it for the other person of sex difficult to work with. Requesting that a female saleswomen go to a strip club on company expense easily falls under a hostile work environment, and could put anyone not just women in a uncomfortable situation.

Anyone in the sales world can be aggressive when doing sales, this doesn’t mean break the law in the process. There are many other ways to get sales besides making someone uncomfortable. As mentioned under the case Salespeople both men and women do call the clients, and take them out (Noe, Hollenbeck, Wright & Gerhart, 2009). This can be done by going out to have some drinks, lunch, or outdoor events. By doing any of these, both parties should land themselves in a comfortable environment. This can bring the company sales, and keep employees away from sexual harassment claims.
