Canada: A Post-Industrial Society

Post-Industrialism, a term used to describe a society that passes through a phase predominated by a manufacturing-based economy and moves to a structure based on the provision of information, innovation, finance and services (references required). Therefore, when a society is said to be a post-industrial society, the major portion of the workforce is involved in the service industry, while manufacturing has more or less been outsourced to industrializing economies in order to reduce operating costs. Examples of Post-Industrial countries are United States, Australia, Germany and recently Canada. Today, Canadians emphasize on higher education. The knowledge procured by professionals to produce ideas is more valued than manual labour in a manufacturing industry. Another display of Canada being a post industrial nation is the large urbanization that has occurred and is continuing to grow. These factors point to Canada being a post industrial nation.

Over the decades, Canada has gone through a major transition from the production of goods to the provision of services. The production of goods, which describes an industrial society, has minor effects on Canada’s economy. With each generation, Canadian's are getting more educated and have a greater desire to obtain more knowledge. Due to the internet, there is also an increased access of information available to anyone within a click of a button. Almost 85% of Canada’s population currently uses Internet on a regular basis (Stat Can) Statistics Canada, include year). Regular usage of Internet and the yearning to learn has promoted young Canadians to get higher education. Approximately 24.6% of Canadian population acquired a university degree in year 2007 (Stat Can).
