Organizational Culture Can Help Reduce Burnout in Hospitals

Case Summary

Approximately 72 million patients are treated in over 10,000 hospitals each year in the United States. Medical practitioners are under quite a bit of stress to ensure the quality of care is as high as it can be. When these health care providers are under the gun to perform at a very high level of efficiency and make life and death decisions that can affect the long term health of an individual stress is always a factor that must be considered. Studies have shown that these factors along with sleep deprivation and long shifts can lead to burn out. In order to avoid the burn out factor for the health care providers and staff the leadership team must establish a culture of open communication, trust, support and education to all employees. As we can imagine each health care facility has its own culture beyond the health care field and each of these facilities must cope with these problems as it is appropriate for the culture.

The case (Three Hospitals with Supportive Organizational Cultures)

The case describes 3 hospitals; Baltimore based Johns Hopkins (JH), Armstrong County Memorial Hospital (ACMH) and Akron general Medical Center (AGMC) that provide supportive cultures for its employees. JH has been ranked as one of the top 25 hospitals for 21 consecutive years by U.S News and World report. JH has maintained this by encouraging mentoring, addressing customer satisfaction issues head on, and providing employee development and assistance programs. ACMH is part of the close knit community Kittanning PA. They have a high standard of providing patients with the best care possible. ACMH maintains it supportive culture by providing good benefits to its employees, discounts to local businesses, moral boosting events and celebrations for employee’s dedication and service.
