A review on Derek Bok’s “Academic Values and the Lure of Profit”

In this review, I will look at the writer look at the how lure of profit in university affect academic values and some of the suggestion that he thinks will control the effects. Many authors have also written on the same topic but I think the author of this article indentified some interesting view, for example he relates this issue with the history of intercollegiate athletics. According to the author, universities faced by the various predicaments posed by the modern industrial society have resorted to become more entrepreneurial. Although it is also noted that there is a lot of positive impact associated with the lure of profits, the dominant issue in the article seems to be the negative impact of economic profits on academic values. The author notes the increased demand for better-quality training programs, meaning that universities need more capital and resources to ensure their survival in dispensing their mandate. In this regard, some higher education institutions have pursued money venture, risking concession of academic values. The author notes that schools’ efforts to earn “handsome profit” from companies have even gone to the extent of diverting professors from their on campus duties to teach elementary material to entry level executives. In addition, research findings by Thomas Bodenheiemer, showed that as many as 10 percent of university reports published by researchers on the efficacy of products manufactured by commercial sponsors were actually “ghostwritten” by companys’ personnel.
