Dade Battle Assignment

1. Three of them give times for when the fighting started and when it ended. List them. (6 pts)

Clark: 8:00am 9:00pm

Alligator: 9:00am 12:00pm

Pacheco: 10:00am Near sunset

2. (6 pts.) Clark gives one reason and Alligator gives a different one on why the Indians retreated? /left? After the first phase of the battle. Identify and explain the difference.

Clark mentions a distant gunshot being heard in the distance that caused an Indian on a horse to leave in what seemed to him to be with haste while Alligator mentions that a cannon was fired at him and his comrades multiple times which eventually led to a retreat. The biggest difference here is the method in which the “sound” was made. Clark mentions a gun shot while Alligator was being fired upon by cannons however, the gun shot that Clark heard could have possibly been the cannon fire as heard from a distance.

3. (2 pts.) Of the three, which one do you think is the most accurate account? Again, be specific.

If I had to pick one, I would pick Clark’s account. My reasoning being the care, and professionalism that went into the recording of the details and the whole account in general. He has a more experienced background than the other two from simply being in the fight himself and being a military man who may have had to record things like this in the past.

4. (2 pts.) Now read Dr. Mahon’s secondary account of the battle—remember only concern yourself with what he says about Dec. 28th. Which of the three eye witness accounts does he rely on most for his account of the battle? Be sure to explain why you picked the one you did
