Only the strong survive. This is an old adage that has been around for ages. Yet this adage is quite true. In today’s economy, companies are turning to external sources to build strong strategic alliances. Companies are moving from a ‘closed’ model and are welcoming an open model of knowledge sharing. During times of economic downturns quite often organizations seek to build strategic alliances that will increase their ability to accomplish the mission of goals of the organization. Alliances between organizations are created for a variety of reasons, but most importantly for the overall success of the organization.

However, before alliances can be formed, Patton-Fuller Community Hospital must complete an assessment to determine if currently state of affairs matches the goals and objectives of the hospital. Patton-Fuller believes that it can achieve more by working together rather than going it alone. Although Patton-Fuller was given a grant approximately a year ago, it is time again to assess the current needs and to re-evaluate the goals and objective. Patton-Fuller realizes that teaming up adds complimentary resources and capabilities that the hospital lacks. Additionally, partnering will increase the hospital’s ability to extend its technical and operational resources as well.

Henry Berry (2006), states in Nightingale’s Healthcare News that, “strategic alliances are designed to achieve strategic purposes not attainable by a ‘single’ organization, providing flexibility and responsiveness while retaining the basic fabric of participating organizations.” Many healthcare organizations are facing many challenges and must adopt, restructure the organization to be more effective and efficient in delivering healthcare.
