As the time goes by, the organizations are increasing as the world is growing. An organization may not run smoothly without intervene of a manager. Manager is someone who has the authority to control all the activities of his/her peers so that the purpose of the organization can be achieved (Robbins, Bergman, Stagg, & Coulter, 2012). From the definition of the manager, it is sure that the manager is something needed in every organization. According to Henry Fayol (1988, as cited in Chapman, 2001), there are four important functions of manager that has to be done to accomplish the organization purpose efficiency and effectiveness. There are planning, organizing, leading and controlling the works (Hales, 1999).

The two managers interviewed are Mr. X and Mr. Y. First manager is Mr. X; he is a CEO in PR Company who has a responsibility as a top line manager. He is running a small manufacturing company which has five to nineteen people involved and it is a private sector of company. His company produces and distributes the bakery product to the surrounding area every day. He does planning to make a better future of his company. Second manager is Mr. Y, as well as Mr X he is a CEO in BC Company who acts as a top line manager too. He opens a private and small company which supplying the tractor’s equipment to the other company. Plans and organize all the activities in the company are his responsibility. Only 16 people involved in this company.

This essay will analyze Henry Fayol’s theory which is managerial function to establish the value in understanding the managerial work by linking it with Katz’s managerial skills theory and Mintzberg’s managerial roles theory. And also to analyze to what extent the concept of universality of management is interrelated based on the evidence that gathered from manager interviewed.
