Part 1:

1. There are many advantages of the database management approach over the file processing approach. Database management approach allows for storage of large amounts of information stored in an active database where files are combined. This allows ease of searching for files to analyze and edit in one common place. Use of the database management approach allows end users access through the use of many different programs that contribute to the ease of this process. Companies implementing this process for file storage gain the advantage of effective and efficient database management that leaves them a step ahead of companies using the file processing approach. For example, car mechanics could use the database management approach to keep track of maintenance records of vehicles. Having the availability of records that include the date of maintenance and what parts were changed or serviced on a particular vehicle would aid in troubleshooting discrepancies and save the customer valuable labor hours (Marakas, O'Brien, & O'Brien, 2013).

2. The relational database model has the most widespread use and there are many commercial products used to create and manage them. Benefits of the relational model are that the data structures are stored in a simple two-dimensional tables making this database type easy to use and navigate. The simplicity of this type of model creates limitations on how much information is stored in one particular place. This forces users to link multiple files together to view all the information that may be needed (Marakas, O'Brien, & O'Brien, 2013).
