Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), when used in the form of fibers and filaments, is known as polyester. Purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and monoethylene glycol (MEG) are the primary raw materials used in the manufacture of polyester fiber. Polyesters are made by polymerization of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and monoethylene glycol (MEG). The polymer thus obtained is melt spun to form tow which is a bundle of continuous filaments. The tow is subjected to further processes such as drawing, crimping, spin finish application and then cut into fixed lengths to get cut fibers almost equal in length to cotton fibers. These cut fibers are known as polyester staple fiber (PSF). Polyester staple fibers (PSF) are used in a wide range of applications such as carpets and rugs, fiberfill and nonwoven fabrics, home furnishings and apparels among others. Polyester staple fiber (PSF) has emerged as the fastest growing fiber amongst all types of manufactured fibers.
