Counseling is the process by which a leader provides guidance to their subordinate with a summary of expectations or a summary of their progress over the course of any given amount of time. There are general types of counseling that is used in the Army; they are Reception/Integration, Event Oriented, Performance/ Professional Growth, and Promotion Counseling. While the three types are different they share certain similarities, such as giving the subordinate the guidance they need in order to make the step to the next level. I will explain the meanings, and uses for each in the course of this essay. The reference for this essay can be found in FM 6-22.

A Reception/Integration counseling is used when a new soldier first arrives to their unit and their supervisor uses it to outline what is to be expected of them while they are there, and what the units mission is and how they will be contributing to that mission.

This type of counseling can also be used as reference for later counseling whether for Event Oriented or Performance/Professional Growth. If a soldier does something that is not in line with the standards set forth in the Integration counseling then they can be reminded of it and an appropriate action can be taken, the opposite is also true if the soldier has done something exceeding what was outlined in the Integration counseling then they can be rewarded for the hard work. A Reception counseling can also state the goals of the subordinate and give the supervisor an understanding of how to help their subordinate reach those goals. If there is anything not covered in the counseling, it will be addressed by the supervisor in later counseling’s. Reception/integration counseling’s also help relieve any suspected fears a new soldier may have when arriving to their new assignment. It should help make the person a part of the team, and make them feel like a welcomed addition. It should also cover the Unit infrastructure, post agencies, any off limits...
