Plato Assignment, My Shackle in Life

After reading the Plato article I took a deep look into myself to discover that I have shackled myself to a job that was too limiting in opportunities. This job or career was that of a surgical technologist. The field of surgical technology is described as, “members of surgical teams comprised of surgeons nurses anesthesiologist” (Mayo Clinic, 2013). My job consisted of preparing the surgical suite and instrumentation for the surgeries of the day. I was part of something great but I was limited in what else I could do once the actual procedure was finished. My responsibility was limited as was my accountability, this may seem like a good thing at first but after you have done so many surgeries where can you do next. I didn’t realize my limitation until after I hurt myself and was no longer able to scrub cases. The jobs available for one armed surgical techs were just not there. I discovered that I had limited myself in my scope of practice staying, “under the direct supervision of a registered nurse” (Rogers, 2013, preface).

Once I came to the realization that I cannot be a surgical tech for the rest of my life I sought out a new field with almost unlimited possibilities, nursing. I like the characters in the Plato essay have been kept in the dark as to what was out there, but because of my recent injury I have discovered the light of the possibilities that nursing provides. I have started a new path that should open many doors, almost too many. Now is the time for me to walk into the light and see where my new journey will take me. I have begun by enrolling into this program of nursing here at Bryant and Stratton, so one step at a time one goal after the next; I will live in the light of opportunity and prospects.

Now that I am walking free of the self inflicted restraints of my chosen career path may be I will discover new more fulfilling aspect of human interaction. I can go...
