In a recent New York Times article about a country in the East Asia realm, titled “Population Control is Called Big Revenue Source in China,” a study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the population control policy on China’s economy. It was found that not only were several provinces collecting upwards of $100 million, the money was being collected inconsistently with no management or order to the system. This policy not only fines families for growing, it also has been found to take the children themselves away from the family. A woman named Pan Chunyan said she had been abducted by officials when she was eight months pregnant with her third child. She was then forced to have an abortion because of China’s policy (Wong 2013). Not only are abortions forced upon women but there have also been reports of complete sterilization and kidnapping children in order to move them to orphanages (Wong 2013). Besides the fact that this is wrong and unethical, the policy has taken billions of dollars from Chinese citizens in 2012 alone, and forced women and families into unimaginable situations.

The overall effect of this policy is looking to affect Chinese economy even more poorly in the future because the number of young workers is shrinking. As a result, the price of work is rising. The effect on the economy does not end in China. The whole East Asia realm, and anywhere else that brings work to China, will be affected by this rise in the cost of work. In the hopes to end this policies reign of terror, Wu Youshui conducted this study to raise awareness of the policy. The policy may be affecting other locations in the East Asia realm’s demographics as well. Hopefully, no other countries decide to put into effect a policy this invasive. One that takes a way a basic human right, the right to procreate. In conclusion, the population control policy is not only stealing money and children from their families, but hurting China and the areas around it.
