Events and Developments that Affected the Lives of African-Americans

African-American Civil Rights Movement (1865 to 1895): this points at the reform movements that took place after the Civil War in the United States. The movements were aimed at eliminating racial discriminations against the African-Americans, upgrading education standards, improving employment opportunities for the African-Americans and establishing the African-Americans with the power to vote.

The Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution (1868): this was proposed to response to issues related to slaves after the Civil War in America. It was to establish the citizenship rights and equal protection of the law for every American citizen.

The Fifteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution (1870): this empowered the African-Americans with the right to vote.

The Harlem Renaissance ( 1920s): also known as the “New Negro Movement”, was brought into being by reasons such as hate crimes directed towards the blacks in the United States, the duty of the African-Americans to Culturally define themselves, assimilation and integration among others.

African-American Civil Rights Movement (1954 to 1968): also known as 1960s Civil Rights Movement. Its main goal was to end racial segregation and discrimination against African-Americans. It was also supposed to put in place legal identity and national protection of the citizenship rights put in the constitution and federal law.

Second Great Migration (1940 to 1970): in this historical event, more than five million African-Americans moved from the South to the North, Midwest and West. Took place through the World War II. It was bigger than the Great Migration which took place between 1910 and 1940.
