There are three different generations to whom a market manager could make their target markets. The three marketing generations are: baby boomers, generation X, generation Y, and generation Z. You must choose the appropriate generation to market products and services too. Finding the correct generation allows a company to market profitable products and/ or services to the correct market.

The first generation is the “baby boomers” generation. These are the people born between 1946 and 1964. They are important people to consider when marketing because; they are a large group of potential consumers. This is a group of people who’s looking to retire. They are good people to market vacations, health care and financial services too.

After baby boomers, immediately comes generation X or “Gen X”. These are the people born from 1965 to 1977. They are fewer in number than the baby boomers but, they are smarter people. Generation X had the opportunity to attend college and get an education. This is the generation you sell family vacations, or new cool family trucks.

Our next generation is generation Y. These techno savvy people are sometimes called the Millennials. They are people born from 1978 to 1994. This is the generation you market: housing, appliances, furniture, and electronics too. Personally, this is the generation that created the big change. In 1989, the World Wide Web was invented. You no longer have to deal with long lines at the post office; you can email people for quicker responses! Honestly, when was the last time someone bought a stamp?

Last, but not least, generation Z. This refers to people born since 1995. This is a younger group that market managers are still working on to identify trends and opportunities. This is the generation that’s more diverse in: cultures, religions and races. They are born exposed to the digital world of today; cell phones and the Internet is the norm.
