Dear Jean and Lauren,

First of all, congratulations on the engagement! It is my wish that you two have a long and prosperous marriage. As you know, interpersonal communication in a marriage is extremely important. Bevan and Sole (2014) define interpersonal communication as a unique type of communication that involves two individuals interacting via face-to-face or mediated channels. Developing a relationship into an effective marriage will take a lot of interacting with each and developing each person’s individual communication skills. However, in order to properly develop these skills, you both must first understand how these skills work. I learned this firsthand with Krystina, but wish to share my experiences and research with you. I do not have all the right answers, but I hope some of this will help make your marriage a long and lasting one.

Privacy in communication is extremely important. I do not think you two will have a problem with this as you are both pretty private people, especially Jean. He refuses to even put his name on his T-Mobile voicemail. But seriously, you are each other’s rock and conversations should stay with one another. While other people would love to hear you gossip about one another, keep it to yourselves or in your one-on-one conversations with each other. For example, say that Jean leaves the toilet seat up all the time, and this infuriates you Lauren. Lauren, you should not complain about it to your friends at Villanova around the “water cooler.” Instead, you should sit Jean down and discuss why it bothers you that he constantly leaves the seat up. It’s amazing how when one spouse complains or gives too much information to their friends, it always comes back to the other person.
