a. Design office space for these employees. Show all calculations and justify the size of their offices.

1 general manager at 200 ft2 + 5 managers at 150 ft2 + 19 others at 100 ft2 = 2850 ft2

I determined the sizes for the office using the textbook and the organization chart provided. I grouped the positions into the best category and used those areas.

b. What supporting office facilities would you recommend to your client for this office area, and why?

I suggest housekeeping, maintenance, security, vending, telephone and computer infrastructure, printer area, and file storage. All of these office facilities are necessary or needed now or for the future if the company is successful.

3. (10) What is the difference between a plot plan and master plan?

A plot plan is how the building, parking lot, and driveways are positioned on the property. Utilities, drains, main highways are important in the plot plan. The master plan is the finished product of the plant, it shows every detail, such as machines, desks, workstations etc.

4. (10) What are the advantages and disadvantages of using CAD for your plant layout?

The disadvantages are the initial cost, the cost of hiring a CAD user, reliance on inaccurate input, and oversimplification of input variables.

The advantages are speed, accuracy and efficiency. Changes and corrections are less expensive, stored electronically for future use and sharing of information.

5. (10) Describe the value of input from veteran employees on your design proposal, compared to using only quantitative data that results from calculation and analysis.

Veteran employees give input as to problem or issues that are omitted from calculated data. Their experience also gives useful suggestions to prevent future issues.

6. (10) How does installing more or less automated equipment affect the various facilities design performance measures?

More automation requires correctly matched in-process inventory storage....
