Discuss the interactive capabilities of digital TV and the choices it gives to broadcasters that they did not have before its invention.

The concept of the TV was introduced in the 1930s, however, the technical progress of the TV was interrupted by World War II. Nevertheless, by the 1950s the TV was fully developed and widespread. During those decades of popularity, the broadcasting of television was utilizing analog technology, which was producing inferior sound and picture quality.

The big switch from analog to digital television (DTV) occurred on June 19, 2009 (Dominic 264). The digital TV, on the other hand, reproduces superior picture and sound without any interference or fading. In addition, the digital signal uses less bandwidth, which enables the TV stations to force more information into the same space, therefore, allows them to broadcast multiple channels with different programming. “For example, a station might broadcast a network program on its main channel, a local newscast on a digital subchannel, and weather on another subchannel” (Dominic 265).

Conversely, the introduction of digital television raises not only the quality of the transmitted content, but mostly relates to the interactive capabilities being offered to the broadcasters. The interactive TV is complementary to digital TV, or possibly its evolution. It allows the broadcasters to engage with its viewers, who can actively “contribute” to what is on their television screens. They can influence the course of the events, participate in the discussions and comment, and on occasion have a good time.

Moreover, digital TV allows broadcasters to reach more viewers by utilizing internet and other devices than just the TV sets. For example, the broadcast networks are capable of transmitting their full programing on their Web sites.
