CREDIT HOURS & PREREQUISITES

The federal definition of a semester credit hour is one hour of classroom instruction and two hours out of class student work each week.

Prerequisites: ENG 1101 with a minimum grade of "C"

INTRODUCTION & COURSE DESCRIPTION

Explores the philosophic and artistic heritage of humanity expressed through a historical perspective on visual arts, music, and literature. The humanities are presented as a source of subjective insights for the understanding of people and society. Topics include: historical and cultural developments, and contributions of the humanities.

COURSE COMPETENCIES

Compare and Contrast philosophic contributions of Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, etc. and their impact on literature, religion, politics, and painting.

Analyze the political climate from ancient to modern day and identify how politics impacted the church and state.Interrogate ancient symbols and their impact on selected works of art.

Recognize major phenomena (war, plagues, etc) and trace the impact of such phenomena on literature, music, philosophy, art work.

Examine the changes in architecture from antiquity to modern day and compare and contrast the differences of each architectural edifice.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Recognize thematic occurrences in literature that center around human existence and creation in the Ancient

Period.
