Reading, Writing, and Speaking

Reading, Writing and Speaking

When reading there are many different strategies you can use to make reading more effective. A couple of strategies I have learned throughout this course that have helped me are, “Note where you get stuck” (Ellis,2014,) this allows you to see what you are struggling with. “Read it out loud” (Ellis,2014,) often times when we are reading to ourselves it can be easy to skip over certain words or sentences. This can cause us not to have a full understanding of what we just read. Reading out loud can help emphasize different words.

Learning how to increase your reading speed and vocabulary, is something many students struggle with. Throughout this course I learned that it is possible to read faster just by making an effort to do so. Some other techniques I learned are “Divide words into parts” (Ellis,2014,) one of the many ways to increase your vocabulary is to divide unfamiliar words into syllables. “Learn, even when your dictionary is across town” (Ellis,2014,) keep 3x5 cards handy and whenever you are in class or reading and come across an unfamiliar word write it on the card and look up the definition later.

No matter your age, when you are a student you are bound to have distractions at home when you are trying to read/study. Distractions are something I have always had a very hard time with, mainly because I did not know how to deal with them. The main technique that helped me was “Attend to people first” (Ellis,2014,) doing this allowed me to find balance between spending time with my family, getting my homework done and having a little me time. The way to do this technique is to spend a little time with your family or friends before studying. After you are done you must explain you have work to do and let them know how much time you are going to need to focus on your studies. This was hands down my favorite thing I learned from this course.
