Country Report of Kenya
The Republic of Kenya is in the eastern Africa, with Indian Ocean in the
south-east, Tanzania in the south, Uganda and Lake Victoria in the west, South Sudan
in the north-west, Ethiopia in the north and Somalia in the north-east. (fig 1)
Kenya covered an area of 580,367 sq km which includes land area of
569,140 sq km and water area of 11,227 sq km, and it has a coastline of 536
km.(The WORLD FACTBOOK, n.d.)
The population in Kenya is 44,037,656, estimate in July 2013, ranks 31th
in the world. GDP at purchasing power parity is $76.07 billion, estimate in 2012,
ranks 84th in the world. And the GDP per capita is $1800, estimate in 2012, ranks
a dismal 198th out of 229 counties in the world. (The WORLD FACTBOOK, n.d.)
The sector of agriculture contributes 24.2% of GDP, and it employs 75%
labor force in Kenya in 2012. “Half of the sector’s output remains subsistence
production” (COUNTRY PROFILE: KENYA, 2007) it is really bad for the
economy system. While Kenya’s services sector contributes 61% of GDP in
2012(The WORLD FACTBOOK, n.d.), and it is dominated by tourism.
In Kenya, 50% population lives below poverty line. There are many poor
people in this country. (The WORLD FACTBOOK, n.d.)
The household income or consumption proportion hold by the lowest 10%
is 1.8%, and hold by highest 10% is 37.8%.(The WORLD FACTBOOK, n.d.)
The literacy rate of total population in Kenya is 87.4%. It is the
proportion of people at age 15 and over can read and write. And male is 90.6%,

female is 84.2%. (The WORLD FACTBOOK, n.d.)The education level between
male and female is not equal.
