What Would You Do

If you were in charge of Waste Management, what would you do?

The Waste Management Corporation is facing a difficult challenge. As more and more companies are seeking to reduce waste produced through recycling. Along with the environmental advocates’ protests, the company must change the way it does business in order to meet the challenge of this environmental changes. As CEO there are several steps that I would take base on the high cost of collecting and sorting recyclable materials. I would first call a meeting of my top people in each division of the company:

1. To solicit input on moving the company in a new direction and get feedback on what each department head feels that direction should be

2. Have all vice presidents and top level managers review our current strategic plan in conjunction with the suggestions made by department heads

3. Have all vice presidents and top level managers draft a new strategic plan including new company goals and objectives for my review

4. I would concurrently have the company’s finance department investigate cost effective ways to handle hazardous material from televisions, computers and other electronic material to include the possibility of shipping the material to countries with less stringent rules than the United States regarding lead, mercury, etc. We would NOT recycle this material as it would be too expensive to “collect and sort.”

5. I would use the critics and waste management advocacy groups to my advantage by inviting these groups to meet with our public relations department as a show of goodwill. This would provide a platform for their concerns to be heard by a waste management company in a public forum. I would make sure the meeting was recorded and well publicized in the media.

6. I would take the concerns of these groups concerns (that prove reasonable) into consideration before finalizing the company’s new strategic plan.
