Active Directory

Microsoft first released the active directory with Windows 200 in 1999, but it was at its full capability with Windows Server 2003. With significant improvement with Windows Server 2008, there are five main services within the directory. These services are domain services, certificate services, lightweight directory services, federation services, and management services. Domain services is the corner stone for every windows domain network. Active directory domain services stores information about the members in the domain and some of these include access rights and credentials. A domain controller is multiple servers running, it is activated when a user logs into a device and it keeps a log of what that person is doing while logged on. Most modern Microsoft servers and their server technologies rely on domain services, some examples include encrypting file system, BitLocker, and remote desktop services. Another active directory services is the lightweight services, which is a lightweight service on Windows servers. A major benefits for the use of the lightweight service is Windows security principles for authentication. It is easy to install and maintain, it can be reinstalled without restarting the computer, and increased reliability by separating application directory from other services. Certificate services establish a public key infrastructure, it creates, validates, and receives certificates for organizing data. These services are used to encrypt files, network traffic, and emails. To use the certificates services requires Windows Servers 2008 and an active directory service infrastructure. The federation service is a single sign-on service, for example blogs, shopping online, and forums, it also requires active directory services.
