The Unknown

English 215

November 2015

When you’re riding past or even seeing commercial on T.V you would think that nursing homes, assistant living, any In care facilities are a safe haven for the Elderly to be cared for during their golden years. Unfortunately is has become a nightmare for senior citizens across the country.

As a child I always wonder what was a nursing home/ assistant living facility, what goes on there, and who live there. Has it ever cross you mind. Am pretty sure it has. As the million times it did mine.

Well as I did a little research these are a few facts that I found out, “About 5% of seniors live in a long term care facility at any given time.

• One-third of all Americans will require nursing home care at some time in their lives

•More women than men reside in nursing homes

•One-half of the people entering nursing homes will remain there for the balance of their lives.

As years went by I got a little older and decided one year I was going to volunteer at a facility. The summer of 2000 I was a volunteer in a nursing home in the area, that was a year I will not forget, so much went on behind the scenes that no one family member would imagine.

But as workers and volunteers you could not exposed the unknown or you would be discharge. You no other words fired. If it had gotten back to any manager or team members that you was the one who snitch everybody would be on your back. When I stated the unknown went on I really mean examples such as

•Physical Abuse

•Sexual Abuse

•Emotional or Psychological Abuse

•Neglect

•Abandonment

•Financial or Material Exploitation

•Self-neglect

Yep that’s right, all kind of unknown goes on behind the pretty white walls. another hurtful example that caught my eye during research was this one

“I went to visit my mother on Sunday February 16, 2014. I was stopped by a nursing home employee who worked on the hallway where my lived. She told me that my mother was no longer there. At first I...
