DEFINITION OF HOSPITAL PHARMACY
* It may be defined as the practice of pharmacy in a hospital setting including its organizationally related facilities or services.
* It also a department or division of the hospital wherein the procurement, storage, compounding, manufacturing ,packaging medications through drug-therapy management for hospitalized and ambulatory patients are performed by legally qualified professionally competent pharmacists.
It includes the responsibility for the safe and appropriate use of drugs in patients which includes among other things, the rational selection, monitoring, dosing, and control of the patients over all drug-therapy programs which has been referred to as clinical pharmacy.
DEVELOPMENTAL HISTORY OF HOSPITAL PHARMACY
According to URDANG (author of HISTORY OF PHARMACY) Hospital pharmacist was the first recognized representative of the pharmaceutical profession. Hospital pharmacists were employed in the hospitals which were a part of many early monasteries. These old hospitals include a description of the “apothecary shop” and its garden for the cultivation of the medicinal herbs.
From this ancient period, hospital pharmacy passes into the early american era, in 1752 when PENNSYLVANIA HOSPITAL, the first in north america was opened with Jonathan Roberts as its hospital pharmacist.
In the Philippines hospital pharmacy dates far back to organization of hospitals such as HOSPITAL MILITAR in CEBU (1565), HOSPITAL MILITARF in MANILA (1571), HOSPITAL SAN JUAN de DIOS (1577), HOSPITAL DE SAN LAZARO (1577), HOSPITAL DE SAN GABRIEL (1588), CHINESE GENERAL HOSPITAL (1891), and PHILIPPINE GENERAL HOSPITAL (1911).
It was not recognized professionally till 1954 when the 5 year curriculum included it as an elective in the subjects offered in some schools.
