After watching “Priest”, I observed sociological concepts which I think it is great relate to the movie. First, it is about religion function. Second, it is about Greg Pilkington’s deviant behavior against the society. Third, it is about social control.

This movie is talking about Catholicism which is a religion. According to Durkheim, one function of religion is supportive function. In this movie, Lisa was forced sexual behavior by her father. She cannot tell her mother therefore she told priest and hope that God can stop her suffering. As she believes that God can help her. Actually, supportive function of religion is always applied in our daily life. For example, I will pray when I face some difficulties like my exam mark is unsatisfied which make me feel tired and depressed. When I prayed, I will feel relaxed and better and I can keep going although the mark is the same. Also, People will hold a funeral when their loved ones died. Funeral can give a support to people. Religion gives a spiritual sustenance to believer.

The main character who is Greg Pilkington is a priest; however, he loves a man. He acts against a social norm which is unacceptable homosexual love. Also, priest is expected to be celibate. Therefore, Greg is regarded as performing a deviant behavior. Homosexual love occurs not only in the movie but also in the reality. Many homosexuals fight for the legalization of homosexual marriage. There are 14 countries allowing the legalization of homosexual marriage such as Netherlands, Canada, Norway, Iceland, Argentina, and French. It is a controversial issue in many countries. According to Durkheim, deviant behavior is “functional” because it induces social changes. However, it may be a good or bad change for the society. For example, the legalization of homosexual marriage may good for homosexuals; however, it may bad for the opponents who are worried about love view of the next generation.
