The Berlin Wall and The Cold War

The Berlin Wall was constructed in 1961 by east Berlin. This wall was built as a way to separate East Berlin and West Berlin as these two different regions had different views on how they were to be run. The wall was built as an effort to prevent people from leaving East Berlin as people started to not like Its communist ways. This dividing point was said to be the "Iron Curtain" that separated the democratic western countries between the communist countries of Eastern Europe throughout the Cold War.

This all started as World War II started to come to an end. During this time the country of Germany has gone separate ways and resulted in splitting into two separate countries. East Germany became the communist country which was controlled by the Soviet Union. West Germany went a different route in becoming a democratic country which allowed them to become allies with the major powers of the world at this time such as Britain, the United States, and France.

Berlin, the capital of Germany, was the center point of all this action. Berlin was located on the eastern side, but was controlled by Britain, the United States, and France because it wanted to go is separate ways as well. The problem that occurred was that when the people in East Germany started to gain knowledge that they were not being treated as well as the people in West germany, they did not want to be controlled by the communist Soviet Union anymore. These people began to try to abandon the eastern side of the country and try to live on the west side. As time went by the number of people leaving the east kept going up. This scared the Soviet Union because they were losing so many people that they were running scarce on workers. In the course of 10 years around 2 million people left the eastern side in an attempt to live in the west.
