IMPACT OF 2010 IOM REPORT ON FUTURE OF NURSING

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation committee and the Institute of Medicine {IOM} in 2010 performed a study and made some suggestions on how to improve nursing profession to fit into the implementation of Affordable Care Act [ACA]. Some of the recommendations include accessibility of care to the people, disease prevention, educational proposals, collaborative care and many others. The goal of the IOM is to make some recommendations that will change nursing programs at all levels from the institutional to the national level to befit the new system of healthcare known as Affordable Care Act. My primary focus for this project based on the recommendations made related to nursing education, nursing practice {primary care}, and leadership.

Recommendations made by 2010 IOM report on Nursing Education, Nursing Practice and Leadership.

Nursing education was one of the controversial recommendations made in 2010 IOM reports. The reports stated that nursing education is so fragmented because there are many points of entry into the service examples are certificate programs, associate's degrees, and baccalaureate degrees. They proposed that all registered nurses must be BSN prepared nurses. The main purpose of this is that there will be uniformity in the entrance of nursing practice which will prepare nurses for leadership roles. {RWJ, 2010}.The reports stated further that with all RNs been BSN, they would be in better position to advance their education to the master's or doctoral level. It further suggested that the status of higher education which is a requirement for leadership roles are in demand and absence of nurses in the ladder are apparent.
