Draping: Market Research

Fashion design is all about being creative and coming up with a collection that is unique and can be worn ubiquitously. One of the most important weeks in fashion design is Fashion Week. It can be strenuous to try to guess what trends will be popular for each season because trends tend to change rapidly. This exciting week announces new innovative ideas that will soon become a trend. Eventually everyone will follow this trend and begin to wear all the clothing. I enjoy looking at new fashions designs to see what I do like in clothes and what I am not too fond of and how they relate to draping. Fashion Week for Fall 2013 has introduced me to many styles that I would not normally enthrall me. These designs were created by Vera Wang, Michael Kors, and Anna Sui.

Vera Wang’s collection had the familiar black color scheme for fall clothing but also contained bright patterns. I loved the structure in her clothing which contained mainly structured skirts, pants, and tops. A lot of the structure in her collection was based off of the peplum trend that is very popular now. Instead of always creating the same peplum look she also put a lot of side cowls in her skirts to give the boxed fit. Some of the side cowls also contained pockets which is always handy in a dress for a girl. I noticed in one of her jackets she used a 3/4 roll hem cuffed sleeve, which pairs perfectly with slender trousers. One dress contains princess darts in the bodice, with a bubble skirt on top of a basic skirt. Vera Wang’s collection has a lot of darts and stiff structure, meanwhile retaining the black with subtle color scheme for Fall which is classic yet irresistible.

Unlike Wang, Kors used a brighter color scheme to pair with his black. Even though he used brighter colors he also designed very structured clothing and used camouflage and houndstooth as his pattern.
