Corruption – Latvia compared to Denmark as a role model.

Corruption is using your official position or interacting with person who is in official position to acquire personal benefit. It involves many activities like embezzlement or bribery. Fight against corruption is very important because it reflects trust in our government. It also is unfair to businesses who are honest to the ones that are not. I decided to review this subject because there are not a lot of corruption related crimes in past. It means that there is not a strong fight against corruption. That’s why I want to compare Latvia’s situation to the situation in more successful countries. Firstly, we will see how Latvia is doing:

Latest results which were made in 2015 shows that Latvia was in 40th place amongst all world in corruption. [1] There is an assumption that if the economy gets better then corruption gets lower, but that is not the situation in Latvia. [2] In Latvia economy has grown but the statistics show that Latvia is not getting better in fight against corruption. The data shows that Latvia got 55 points out of 100 points second year in a row.[1] That confirms my previous statement. To fight against corruption persons involved have to face criminal charges, but as research made in 2014 shows that in Latvia only several criminal charges were made related to corruption.

Industry’s that has highest risk of corruption in Latvia are construction, public procurements and healthcare. [3] In Latvia’s case it is hard to fight against corruption because it all starts in its roots. It means that the problem is in the highest of instances. There have been problems with people who works in KNAB (Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau) and financial police. [2] Because we are searching how to fight against corruption now we will look at best in this field. We are going to look how Denmark is doing because it has lowest corruption level in world.
