The media covers a substantial part of the criminal justice process, criminals, and the crimes. The modern media devotes its attention mostly to covering stories that portray crimes and the criminal justice system. At the epicenter of the criminal activities, there are law enforcement officers. The police officers play a significant role in the society by participating in the maintenance of law and order. However, most media portray them as violent and thieving murderers for several reasons.

Christine and Henry Hess(2014) argue that the mass media depict police officers as violent and thieving murderers because of the negative perception the public has on them. The people perceive the police officers as inhuman creatures who do not have a reasoning capability. Consequently, both the innocent people and the fugitives have the tendency to develop internal fear of the slightest encounter with a police officer (Mason, Richard, and Jarosław Suchoples. 2015). Therefore, the media portray the officers in such a way in order to achieve a scripted agenda.

According to Packer (2015), the media portray the law enforcement officers as violent or thieving murderers because of the power the authorities bestow on them. The security deputies are entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining law and order at whatever costs. In some cases, maintaining the harmony involves the use of brutal force. Therefore, it is unlikely for the police officers to keep law and order in a perilous situation using a dialogue or other humane methods. In the endeavor to see a peaceful coexistence among people, the police can resort to cruel methods in order to achieve the set objective. For the above mentioned reason, television and the films depict the cops as violent and thieving murderers.
