General George Patton once spoke the famous words "Lead me, follow me, or get the hell out of my way.” We as professionals cannot lead others, support others effectively, or even make room for future leaders without first building trust within our profession. Trust is the bedrock of our Army and in my eyes, the most important characteristic of the Army profession due to its ability to either build or break a unit and its leaders.

Trust in our profession begins with comradery between peers. We've all heard the line about the Army is a giant melting pot; issues with race, gender, and other social stigmas exist but must be cut away for resilience, cohesion, and belief that the Soldier next to you will choose to fight by your side. Trust between peers and our shared values allows this trimming process to happen and carry them through military struggles into the remainder of their lives.

Trust among peers is a lifelong foundation. From the time of great Rome until today, it stands as much as a fundamental element in the Army as it does in progression to the civilian world. Whether it's trusting the person to your left and right with your life before you breach a door in Kabul, or trusting Peter in accounting to finish the TPS report, without this level of trust, teamwork breaks down and the ability to function in our operating environments becomes obsolete. “The level of resilience and cohesion within an Army unit correlates directly to trust between Soldiers in that unit.”
